Whenever skimming in the islands always respect the locals and give them right of way.
MAUI
Kaanapali Beach
Breaks good year round, on north or south swells. The point is better known for liners and tech as the whaler provides sick wrap around barrels on big swells. Watch out for the reef at the point, can be hazardous (as well as the tourists that like to stand in the way) Use extreme caution! If you're ever in Maui in February, come and check out Skim Kids Hawaii's annual event "The Westside Skim Jam" a competition for all ages.
Napili Bay
Great beach for families, and beginner riders. Small waves can be ridden year round, best on a giant south swell or north, north east. Slightly sloped beach, but not too steep for the keiki.
Makena (Big Beach)
Definitely the best skimspot for advanced riders on Maui. Breaks better on a higher tide and during summer but can catch the wrap from big north and west swells year round. Brent Edwards and his crew of 'Maui Skimmers' dominate this break. Very powerful shorebreak.
Hamoa Bay
Quite a mission to get there, but if you're passing through Hana don't hesitate to check it out. Not as good as the other breaks on Maui but is often uncrowded with it's beautiful black sand beach and small kine shore pounders.
OAHU
Sandy Beach
One of the most dangerous shorebreaks in all of Hawaii. Expert riders only. From liners to some of the best wrap barrels Sandy's can definitely be a humbling experience. Always the first stop on the HASL competition series every year. If you want to see some serious action don't miss out on Sandy's. If in doubt, don't go out!
Makapu
Hawaiian for 'bulging eyes'. There's no doubt this spot will blow your mind if you catch it on the right day. With it's crystal clear blue water and sparkling white sand, long liners and good times can be had with a beautiful view of rabbit island in the background.
Yokohama Bay
Off the beaten path, Yokes is definitely one of the best skim spots in all of Hawaii. Having a very steep sloped beach with a nice runway, can provide water starts that take you out to some amazing liners and push you halfway across the beach. Wrap around barrels are guaranteed and there's even a sick peak that A frames outside if you like to paddle out and surf back in on your skimboard.
Waimea Bay
Known for the Eddie Aikau big wave surfing competition every year, little do some know about how perfect the skim can get there as well. Also an advanced break, Waimea is the most powerful shorebreak in the Hawaiian Islands. If you catch it on the right day when the sand bar is good it could be one of the best waves you've ever ridden. Once again, experts only! Better towards the beginning and end of winter.
KAUAI
Shipwreck's
This is the premiere skim spot located on the south side of the island. With an amazing stretch of powdery white sand this spot will have you planing far outside then wrapping and connecting waves and side wedgers back up and down the beach, somewhat of an underground spot, you won't be skimming with any crowds. Breaks best on a small southerly swell when the sand bar is right and can be a little rocky at times. If it's too flat to skim you can always cliff jump to the left side of the beach.
Kekaha Beach
Located on the Westside about ten minutes north of Waimea, you'll find and endless stretch of beach that runs for miles all the way up to the military base. There are multiple beach parks and spots along the side of the road. If you have 4WD, get down on the beach and go discover your own new skim spot with no one else around. Look for the spots where the rivers meet the sea, those are the areas where the sand bars are best formed. The beach has a nice slope and the water can be a little murky at times. Waves are fun and playful with the "Kauai Classic" held every year in August.
LANAI
Hulopo'e Beach Park
One of the best beaches and coolest places to hang out on this island. Towards the left of the beach during south swells provides a nice side wedger that bounces off the rocks. The beach isn't too sloped but is enough to get some good speed and do some cool tricks. The waves can get really good for skurfing on the outside as well.
